Ok, so here at Varia Studios, we like to enjoy ourselves. This means that we don't tolerate negative, wasteful or trashy comments on artwork.
We have constructed this guide at the cost of a lot of hours to ensure that it is clear to everyone what we are expecting. This area is heavily monitored and punishment will be handed out. This is the only area that we will not tolerate flaming (even humurous).
If someone has put their time and effort into creating something that are willing to share with everyone, it is to be expected by them and by us that when you rate their piece, it will be done with care and thought as well. Put as much effort into the comment as was put into the piece.
As a result, we have put together the following key points to ensure that The Spotlight is kept interesting and fun.
Dont be an asshole. Ok, so this one is pretty obvious and self - explanatory. But how do you tell if you are an asshole?
If that isn't obvious enough, then go back to school. Please.
Be considerate. Think about what this person has done. They are putting themselves out there, even though it might be the internet and the advantage of anonymity, but, they are still risking their virtual reputation to the judgement of their peers and fellow designers.
RESPECT this, and put thought into your own response. Remember, your response is also depicting your personality. If you don't want to be considered as an asshole (above formentioned), then think about the response that you will be saying to this person. Show empathy and courtesy.
Prepare for negative feedback. While we expect people to be thoughtful with their opinion, we aren't forcing everyone to like the work. It is ok for the person to hate the look, or the aesthetics of it. Or to morally against the depiction, this is art, art is controversial! So be prepared to be flamed by some people, be prepared for negativity - the world isn't perfect. Not everyone has the same viewpoint.
Give what you get. Don't just ask for rates, always give back to the community. If you don't give others rates, then no one will rate you. Its a circle and a cycle, one nesecary for the survival of The Spotlight. If you give a little, you get a little. What goes around comes around. These are good sayings to live by. Being selfish will get you nowhere around here.
Debate what you believe. As above mentioned, graphic designing is art. Art is controversial. Express your opinion, your ideas and emotions. Show us what you have, and what you want, what your perception of the world around us is! Argue the point that others are making and critique them! If someone makes a point, agree or disagree, or agree to disagree. It's your choice, make bold statements about poverty and war. Make art for aesthetics or persuasion, art is art.
Remember that The Spotlight is meant to encourage, help and be fun for everyone. If you are an above mentioned asshole, we ask that you refrain from ruining the community of The Spotlight. These policies are enforced, so be warned. We want this to be a positive experience, not a negative one.
If you can't take the heat, don't paticipate. If you can only give, but can't take, don't post. Its a decision, and an acknowledgement that you will hear things that you do and don't like. Everyone's interpretation is equally valid and valued. Remember, that you are speaking to human beings, not a computer. The people behind these pixelated, digitalised words have feelings and emotions every bit as much as you.
If doesn't matter. Even if you win a fight on the internet, you're still an asshole.
